There are three social classes in America: upper middle class, middle class, and lower middle class.
Judith Martin, Miss Manners
I am a Unitarian Universalist woman from the east coast. I am rich and come from a family that has long been rich. I would like to use my UU faith and religious principles to become more aware of my advantages and how they can help and hurt others. I am not a member of UU congregation at the moment in large part because my background and privilege have been obstacles to belonging.
A discussion is underway in religious liberalism about what it is like to feel ashamed by and excluded from the upper-middle-class assumptions that dominate our churches. That laudable discussion looks almost exclusively at what it is like to be from a lower class stratum. I want to contribute my voice because those hurts can be not just created in, but also felt from, the other side of the margin. I hope I help, and I hope to learn, too.
